Commissariat à l’Energie Atomique et aux Energies Nouvelles - LITEN

Overall presentation

CEA-LITEN (Commissariat à l’Energie Atomique / Laboratory of Innovation for New Energy Technologies and Nanomaterials) is one of the most important and recent European research centres. CEA/LITEN has three main activities: hydrogen and fuel cell technologies, solar energy development, technological innovations in the field of materials, processes and markers. CEA/LITEN is a major partner for industry with 350 contracts of partnership research in course in 2008, about 100 patents registered in 2008. With an annual budget of 66 M€, CEA/LITEN employs 550 people who are specialists in the fields of physics, chemistry and nanomaterials.

Several Laboratories of CEA/LITEN are involved in the ANASTASIA project.

  • LTS (Laboratory of Surface Technologies) is specialized in the design, development and optimization of nanomaterial-based coatings for a wide range of applications: optics, fuel cells, thermal and solar photovoltaics, using many different techniques (PVD, CVD, sol-gel processes…).
  • LPCE (Laboratory of Processes and Components for Energy) studies fuel cells, Li-ion batteries (materials, components and recycling for power, hydrogen….) and innovating processes and scale-up for nanomaterial and component industries. In particular, a patented specific process for nanomaterial dispersion inside polymer matrices has been recently implemented.
  • LCSN (Nanochemistry and Nanosafety Laboratory) mainly studies the design of nanoparticles by wet syntheses for various purposes: energy (nanofluids and nanoparticles for solar devices), lighting, traceability and anti-counterfeiting). LCSN is able to make nanomaterials at pilot scale using various high-tech synthetic pathways in order to satisfy the needs of its industrial partners. The second important field of investigation of LCSN is nanosafety. The goal is to qualify and characterize the personal protective equipments and the working areas regarding nanoparticles (down to 1 nm).

Activities within ANASTASIA

CEA-LITEN is the Coordinator of the ANASTASIA project.

The main activities of CEA-LITEN in ANASTASIA concern the development of the tape material and process. LPCE is mainly involved in the incorporation of nanofillers in the epoxy resin. More precisely, this laboratory will study the incorporation of nano-clays and carbon nanotubes by functionalisation. LCSN with work on the in situ synthesis of nano-fillers in the epoxy resin through reverse emulsions. LTS will be studying the quasi-inorganic route, mainly working on hybrid materials with large inorganic contents.
